LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the Salesian Boys & Girls Club. For over 70 years, our mission has been to instill in youth of East Boston and surrounding communities a sense of competence, usefulness and belonging and to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens. The Salesian Boys & Girls Club has become a trusted resource that allows youth to participate in positive programming rather than being left home alone or engaging in activities that are counter-productive for them and the community. Many children in our communities face challenges including poverty, immigration struggles and drug addiction, just to name a few. Our Club is a safe haven for youths who are directly impacted by these obstacles.
We know that when we work as one, we can move our young people and families forward. Our work with young people, especially those who need us most, is the focus of all of our efforts. The Salesian Boys & Girls Club gives youth and caring adult professionals the chance to join in and advocate in the name of a stronger community.
2018 was a transition year for our organization. I began as Executive Director on January 8th and hired a new director of finance in September. With the transition year officially in our rear view mirror, I am happy to say that we were extremely successful in all of our efforts. The 2018 calendar year showed great progress with nearly 1,500 active members served in the calendar year, an average daily attendance of 252 members per day, and over 10,000 dinners served. Our professional staff (full time & part time) each completed over 20 hours of training via Boys & Girls clubs of America standards and additional trainings via the state of Massachusetts and private in-house trainings.
Our members last year had the option to participate in over fifty (50) field trips including The Puppet Showplace Theatre, Boston Museum of Science, Canobie Lake Scream Fest, a cruise to Spectacle Island and Fenway Park just to name a few. Members participated in seven (7) in house sports leagues that served over 400 children. The club offered a total of 18 programs many of which were new this year. Some of these new programs include: Book Club, Science Club, Girls Stem program, Drama/Dance and Music.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our dedicated Board of Directors, Donors, and Community Partners for helping us move forward each and every day. To our dedicated Youth Development Staff & our Salesian Community members, you are the difference makers, the difference makers who make this organization the most valuable resource for children and families in this community. The efforts you put forth do not go unnoticed, and are truly appreciated.
